What are the common causes vaginitis in Singapore?

The vaginal ecosystem is a delicate and complex environment, with the Lactobacillus bacteria playing a crucial role in maintaining a healthy environment. These bacteria help keep the vaginal pH low (acidic), which inhibits the growth of pathogenic organisms. As such, disruptions to this balance, whether through infections, hormonal changes or irritants, can lead to the development of vaginitis. Some of the common causes of vaginitis include:

What are the symptoms of vaginitis in Singapore?

Vaginitis can manifest differently depending on its causes. In some cases, it may present no symptoms at all.  One of the telling signs of vaginitis is changes in your vaginal discharge. In instances of vaginitis, vaginal discharge changes  that may be evident include;

  • Frothy and yellow-green: typical of trichomoniasis.
  • Greyish and foul-smelling (fishy odour): usually associated with bacterial vaginosis (BV).
  • Heavier or watery discharge: common in many forms of vaginitis.
  • Thick and clumpy (like cottage cheese): often associated with yeast infections.

Additionally, some of the common symptoms that may overlap across different types of vaginitis include:

  • Light vaginal bleeding or spotting outside of your period.
  • Pain during sexual intercourse.
  • Pain during urination (dysuria).
  • Pain when inserting tampons.
  • Vaginal itching burning or irritation.

If you have noticed any changes in your vaginal discharge, we encourage you to seek medical advice immediately.

How is vaginitis diagnosed in Singapore?

Although diagnosing vaginitis is a straightforward procedure, it does involve several key steps to determine the root causes. At Dr. Ma Li Clinic for Women & Advanced Pelvic Surgery, the diagnostic procedure entails:

  • Consultation: Dr. Ma Li will start by asking about your symptoms, including their duration and severity. She will also enquire about your medical and sexual history, including any past STIs and recent use of new products such as detergents or spermicides that might be causing irritation.
  • Physical and pelvic exam: during this exam, Dr. Ma Li will inspect your vagina for signs of inflammation and discharge.
  • Sample collection: to gain a clearer understanding of the issue, Dr. Ma Li will collect a sample of vaginal discharge using a swab. This sample is then sent to a lab for further analysis and to determine the type of vaginitis, which will facilitate outlining an effective treatment plan.
  • Microscopic examination: the lab will proceed to examine the collected sample under a microscope to identify specific cells or organisms, helping to determine whether you have a bacterial infection, yeast infection or other type of vaginitis.
Our doctor will perform a pelvic exam to examine your vagina and look for signs of infection or inflammation.

What are the treatment options for vaginitis in Singapore?

Managing vaginitis effectively involves a comprehensive approach that includes regular screenings and targeted treatments. A range of assessments and management strategies are offered in our clinic to ensure optimal solution for vaginitis;

  • Antibiotics: if a bacterial infection is identified, antibiotics such as Metronidazole or Clindamycin may be prescribed to eliminate the infection.
  • Antifungal Medications: for yeast infections, antifungal treatments like Fluconazole (oral) or Clotrimazole (topical) are commonly used to clear the infection.
  • Antifungal creams: Clotrimazole or Miconazole creams can help treat yeast infections locally.
  • Antibiotic creams: Metronidazole gel can be used for bacterial vaginosis.
  • Vaginal lubricants: over-the-counter options like Replens or KY Jelly can provide relief from dryness and discomfort.

We understand that dealing with vaginitis can be challenging. If you have been experiencing symptoms or would like to schedule a gynaecological screening , contact us to book a consultation with Dr. Ma Li.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

The duration of vaginitis varies depending on its cause. It can last between 2 weeks to 6 months.
Yes, vaginitis can increase your risk of contracting sexually transmitted infections (STIs) because an inflamed vaginal lining is more vulnerable to infections.
Yes, vaginitis can recur. Some women may experience chronic vaginitis, which requires ongoing treatment to reduce the likelihood of recurrence.
While vaginitis can sometimes resolve on its own, treatment is often necessary to completely eliminate the infection and alleviate symptoms. It's advisable to consult a healthcare provider for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan.

To help prevent vaginitis, consider the following proactive measures:

  • Always wipe from front to back when cleaning or washing.
  • Avoid using scented or harsh cleaning products in the vaginal area.
  • Steer clear of clothing that traps moisture or heat.
  • Do not stay in wet clothing for extended periods.
  • Practice good vaginal hygiene.
  • Use protection during sexual activity.
  • Schedule regular gynaecological screenings.
  • Refrain from douching.
While your period can alter the vaginal environment, it will not wash out a yeast infection. Intervention with medication is often necessary to clear the infection.
Drinking water is beneficial for overall health, but it will not flush out a yeast infection.
